I think (and I’m convinced) that discovering the world is not just traveling, but also working in as many fields as you can. That’s why I’m currently a waiter in Italy and why I was a cashier, a cleaner and a dishwasher in the past. When I got to Bologna, I decided I wanted to understand what is to be a server like in a city where eating is the main hobby. I found a job and slowly learned how to manage myself comfortably in a dining room.
Here I am, on October 5, still working in the same place both learning and saving. When I leave Italy I’ll go into details and I’ll explain my experience, which hasn’t always been great. My family, especially my mother, is a little concerned about my future. She doesn’t understand why having studied Journalism and a Master in Social Media I’m not trying to get a job connected to my profession.
As I explained in some other posts, I did work as a Journalist but I quit cause I needed a change, a radical one, in order to challenge and educate myself. It was the best decision I’ve ever made since I’m not the coward and insecure guy I was once. I want to be a reporter, of course I do, but first I feel that I need to get what is the world like.
How can I write about our society without knowing nor understanding it? How can I inform about foreign conflicts being closed in an editorial office? Yes, I get that journalists go out into the streets but I believe it’s not enough. Humans, not just newsmen, have a lack of vision and perspective, and we tend to think that what happens around us is what really happens throughout the world.
For this reason, I love traveling and living abroad. It opens your mind and breaks down stereotypes. Languages are also basic, being the main door to understand a concrete culture or society. I have always been convinced that empathy is fundamental and to get to that point you need to live others’ life.
I wasn’t born to be a waiter in Italy, a dishwasher in New Zealand or a cashier in Sabadell. But when I applied for those jobs I was excited because I wanted to understand what was being that kind of worker like. The experiences have all been amazing. I’ve learned lots of things, such as being human, humble, kind and empathetic.
Here and now I don’t see myself sitting on a chair in whatever comfortable well-paying job because I would feel that I’m missing something really important: THE WORLD. The globe is wider than the size of your office and broader than your 80m2 apartment. Now that I’m young I want to take advantage of my age and learn from everybody as much as I can. This is what I tell my mum. Sometimes, I want to come back home and I even cry because I miss my land but I want to return when I have good things to share and useful contributions.
